Emily – “I want to be a teacher who creates memories”

Hello, my name is Emily and I am a trainee teacher at Prestolee SCITT.

The reason I am training to become a primary school teacher is because no one believed in me or inspired me to follow my dreams as a child. Throughout school, I didn’t have the most enjoyable experience therefore; I want to be a teacher who creates memories. I want to be able to give children learning experience and an environment where the children can thrive. I know becoming a primary teacher is my destiny and I am now only 9 months away from my dream becoming a reality.

I have always wanted to become a primary school teacher since I stepped into Mrs Murphy’s Reception class in 1996. Throughout my school years, I was bullied. Being bullied resulted in me leaving high school with very poor qualifications, no self-esteem and no confidence. I went onto college where I completed a childcare course but I knew then that was not where I wanted my story to end…

After taking some time out to have my little boy Alfie, I went back to college to complete my GSCEs but unfortunately I failed them again. The year after, I went to a different college and tried again; I passed both my Maths and English and secured a place on an access course. After I had passed the access course I went onto study History and Education. This year I finally managed to gain my degree but unfortunately we haven’t been able to have a graduation due to the evolving situation we are currently in. I could finally now start at Prestolee.

I have been very fortunate that over the last 5 years, I have been able to study and work as a Teaching Assistant. This has meant I have been able to have a wide variety of experiences working across EYFS/KS1 and KS2. I have also had the opportunity to work and learn alongside some incredible educators (the majority have come through Prestolee themselves).

I chose Prestolee because I have seen first-hand how passionate, creative and enthusiastic the teachers who were trained at Prestolee have become and this is something I have always wanted to inspire to be like. Since I started the course in September, Prestolee SCITT has become like a family. I have been encouraged to speak up and to believe in myself. As a group we haven’t been able to meet up face to face but the relationship between one another is empowering and supportive. The Prestolee team have given us outstanding training this year so far and go above and beyond each and every day. I know I am only at the start of my journey with Prestolee but I am so thankful for having this wonderful opportunity to train with such an outstanding provider.
