About Us

Prestolee School Centred Initial Teacher Training (SCITT) is a respected provider of Initial Teacher Training, delivering both the School Direct Programme and Core Programme alongside the University of Cumbria and a partnership of Primary Schools across Greater Manchester. Rebecca Dunne, as SCITT Director, Senior Leader of Education for ITT and Chair of the North West Primary Network, maintains strategic control of the work undertaken by Prestolee ITT and she has worked tirelessly over the past couple of years to develop Prestolee ITT's training programmes and drive forwards and advise on ITT regionally.

The development of Prestolee Initial Teacher Training stays rooted in a desire to provide more effective training for the teachers of tomorrow, ensuring the academic excellence of a University-led PGCE is being delivered harmoniously alongside a practical training programme that covers all aspects of the complex life of a teacher of today. All our training programmes merge the best of university-led and school-led Initial Teacher Education and Training to offer a breadth of experience that will best prepare you for your teaching career.

Prestolee Initial Teacher Training has 3 key aims:

DELIVERING QUALITY FIRST TEACHER TRAINING

IDENTIFYING AND DEVELOPING THE LEADERS OF TOMORROW

TRAINING THE BEST TEACHERS FOR THE LEARNERS IN OUR COMMUNITIES

Core training

The programmes have a comprehensive schedule of subject and theoretical training, which is delivered by outstanding practitioners and experts from across our partnership and wider alliance of schools. All training will take place at various locations across our partnership.

In addition to core training, trainees will have weekly sessions as a cohort group to enable discussion, good practice sharing and support. Part of these sessions are response based, and can be dictated by group and individual need as the programme moves along. You will also get the opportunity to elect yourself as Group Leader, representing your fellow trainees during Student Forums and response sessions.

Teaching placements

Hand in hand with the core training is the teaching element of the programmes. You will be based at one of our partner schools for this part of the programme, with location dependant on where you live and preferred key stage, and you will complete a 6 week contrasting placement in an alternative school. All trainees are expertly supported by both a school-based mentor and a professional tutor and there are opt-in opportunities to create a more bespoke programme that is based on trainees’ future career aspirations. There are options to specialise during your contrasting block placement, such as working with an SEN school. You have plenty of time in your base school before your first block placement begins, and this time can be tailored to you. For some this will take the form of observations leading to more interaction with the pupils, and for some more experienced trainees this can be used as an opportunity to push forwards with either group or whole class teaching (contrary to some popular belief, your teaching blocks commence and progress depending on your individual need and capability and you will be fully supported throughout your teaching - for more information on common concerns / misconceptions and questions, click here).

Both the School Direct and Core routes follow a September - July timetable and lead to the award of Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and a PGCE with Masters Credits awarded by the University of Cumbria.

Further study and opportunities

Another advantage of Prestolee's Initial Teacher Training Programmes is that your training and development has the potential to extend beyond your initial teacher training year.

All successful trainees will be offered further training throughout their NQT and RQT years as part of the Prestolee Alumni Group, which will cover both generic training and individually identified needs sessions.
